The radino40 Programmer programs a radino40 module through its 6-pin connector — connected to the PC over Micro-USB.

It stores the firmware transferred last and writes it to a radino40 module again at the press of a button. This also makes it usable as a stand-alone field updater for radino40 devices, without a PC.

Anschluss am PCConnection to the PC

Over its Micro-USB connector the radino40 Programmer identifies itself as a USB device with the ID 303A:1001 and appears as a virtual COM port (“serial USB device”).

It shares this ID with other devices that use an ESP32-C3.

Anschluss am radino40-ModulConnection to the radino40 module

The Programmer is plugged with its 6-pin connector onto the matching 6-pin header at the module. The square pad is pin 1; the mark on the housing of the Programmer points to pin 1.

If you use a radino40 module in your own hardware, place this 6-pin header (2.54 mm pitch) with this assignment next to the module. The module can then be programmed directly with the Programmer.

Taster und LEDsButton and LEDs

The button is at the top left, below it the three LEDs, from the left green, red, blue.

Beim Anstecken an USB läuft ein kurzes Lauflicht: Grün, Rot, Blau, Rot, Grün.

When connected to USB, a short light sequence runs: green, red, blue, red, green.

BlitzeUrsacheAbhilfe
5Übertragung fehlgeschlagenNoch einmal versuchen
FlashesCauseRemedy
1No firmware stored in the ProgrammerStore a firmware (blue must be on)
2The hardware of the module does not match the firmwareChoose the matching firmware or check the module; for a forced update see button
3The module does not answerCheck the seat on the pin header (pin 1) and the supply of the module
4Bootloader replacement failedTry again, do not disconnect the module meanwhile
5Transfer failedTry again

The code flashes three times and then remains as steady red.

TasterButton

BedienungWirkung
Mindestens 3 s haltenUpdate erzwingen: ab 3 s leuchten alle drei LEDs, dann loslassen.
OperationEffect
Short pressThe Programmer checks whether the stored firmware matches the hardware of the module, brings the bootloader up to date if needed and writes the firmware. Duration about 12 s; longer with a bootloader replacement. If the hardware does not match, nothing is written (red, 2 flashes).
Hold for at least 3 sForce the update: from 3 s all three LEDs light up, then release. For this one run the firmware is written without the hardware check, for example to a module that was given the wrong software by mistake.

Caution: A forced update overwrites the software of the module even if the firmware is not intended for it.

A tool for the radino40 Programmer is available as a single HTML file. It runs in Chrome or Edge; nothing is uploaded. Firmware comes as an update file with the extension .programmer.zip from the respective firmware release.

  • Check firmware: shows name, version and target hardware of an update file and checks it for completeness.
  • Store firmware in the Programmer: saves it in the Programmer (about 12 to 30 s). The name of the stored firmware can be displayed, and it can be deleted again.
  • Flash the board: writes the stored firmware to the connected module. The progress is shown in steps: check bootloader, update bootloader, write firmware (with percent), check target module. A checkbox allows writing even if the hardware does not match.
  • The stored firmware can be displayed and deleted.
  • German and English.

Update des ProgrammersUpdating the Programmer

A Programmer with older firmware can be brought to firmware 2.0 with the update package radino40_programmer_update_V2.0.zip. The package contains instructions and a script; no login is required.

Caution: A firmware stored in the Programmer is lost during the update and has to be stored again afterwards.
